Life as a Medical Student in Tbilisi, Georgia

Tbilisi is a historic and fascinating city that was established 1,300 years ago as the new capital by an Iberian king seeking an easily defensible location. The city is located between the Caucasus mountains and the Mtkvari River, so it was chosen for its defensive advantages, yet today, it offers a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere.

The city is an interesting mix of natural architectural beauty, from the charismatic Old Town, with its Orthodox cathedrals, libraries, theatres, and the magnificent Parliament building, to the national botanical gardens, pristine lakes, and Mount Mtatsminda.

With a student population of around 35,000, including 5,000 international students, Tbilisi is home to a diverse academic community with an exciting and busy nightlife. The city is full of places to socialise, including pubs, clubs and restaurants. In fact, the nightlife is so well-established in Tbilisi that international DJs regularly come to the city to change the pace.

Students also have access to a wide variety of recreational activities during their stay in Tbilisi. This includes go-karting, mini-golf, kayaking, and escape rooms, with local ski resorts offering winter sports during the colder months. Language barriers are minimal, as many of the locals speak English, and even if you have trouble communicating with someone, the people around you will be more than happy to help out and translate.

This inclusivity extends to clinical rotations, where doctors are readily available to assist with translations if needed, making Tbilisi not just a place of study but a vibrant, welcoming community.
