Percutaneous coronary intervention

Percutaneous coronary intervention

What is a percutaneous coronary intervention? A percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is used to treat the symptoms of coronary artery disease, which is narrowing of the coronary arteries (blood vessels that supply your heart muscle with oxygen). A PCI is a procedure to widen or unblock an artery using a small inflatable balloon. A stent (metal mesh tube) is usually used to hold the artery open. What are the benefits of a PCI? Having a PCI…

Basic Science Departments

Anatomy:  Beyond studying the structure of the human body, anatomists explore variations in anatomical structures, developmental anatomy, and the application of anatomical knowledge to clinical practice.

Biochemistry: Biochemists investigate the chemical processes that occur within cells and organisms, including metabolism, enzyme kinetics, and the molecular basis of disease.

Microbiology: Microbiologists study microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, focusing on their identification, classification, and the mechanisms of infection and disease.

Physiology: Physiologists examine the functions of organs and organ systems, such as the cardiovascular, respiratory, and nervous systems, to understand how the body works in health and disease.

Pharmacology: Pharmacologists study the effects of drugs on the body, including their mechanisms of action, absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. They also investigate drug toxicity and adverse effects.

Clinical Departments

Internal Medicine: Internists diagnose and treat a wide range of medical conditions affecting adults, including heart disease, diabetes, lung diseases, and gastrointestinal disorders. They also specialize in subfields such as cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and pulmonology.

Surgery: Surgeons perform operations to treat injuries, diseases, and deformities. They specialize in various surgical subfields, such as general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, and plastic surgery.

Pediatrics: Pediatricians provide comprehensive care for infants, children, and adolescents, including preventive care, diagnosis, and treatment of childhood illnesses. They also specialize in subfields like pediatric cardiology, pediatric oncology, and neonatal medicine.

Obstetrics and Gynecology: OB-GYNs provide care for women throughout their lifespan, including reproductive health, pregnancy, childbirth, and menopause. They also perform surgical procedures such as hysterectomies and cesarean sections.

Psychiatry: Psychiatrists diagnose and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. They use a combination of therapy, medication, and other treatments to help patients manage their conditions.

Additional Considerations:

Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Many medical schools foster interdisciplinary collaboration between departments, allowing for innovative research and patient care.

Emerging Fields: With advancements in medical science, new departments and subspecialties continue to emerge, such as regenerative medicine, nanomedicine, and medical informatics.

Clinical Training: Medical students spend a significant portion of their training in clinical settings, working with patients and learning from experienced physicians.
By understanding the diverse roles of these departments, we can appreciate the complexity and breadth of medical education and practice.
