Life as a Medical Student in Oradea, Romania
According to legend, King Ladislaus, the Holy of Hungary, went hunting in the current Oradea fortress area. While resting for the night, Virgin Mary visited him in a dream and told him to build a church on the location. The devout king did as he was told, and thousands of pilgrims came to pray at the new altar. After a while, a castle was raised to protect the church.
Thus, the city is named for the fortress because “Oradea” means “castle”. Today, the fortifications and the church still stand, giving the city a distinctly historical feel. The many baroque buildings of the Austro-Hungarian period of Oradea also add to the sophisticated atmosphere of the Old Town area.
International students find the city very safe and cosy. Moreover, they enjoy the local bar and club scene for its variety. Strolls in the city centre often end in a pub or restaurant for a calorie recharge.
In addition, the city has several parks and gardens for people to reconnect with nature. For those who desire more, Dealul Somleu is a national park just a few miles away from the city. People can explore the hills through several trails across the location.
Term Dates
The academic year usually starts in October. The first semester is 15 weeks, followed by the examination phase in February.
The second semester starts at the beginning of March and ends at the end of June. The exam sessions are throughout July.
