Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome, or ARDS, is a life-threatening condition where the air sacs in the lungs fill up with fluid.

When a patient suffers Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), the lungs are affected by severe inflammation and subsequently scarring, which leads to extremely low level of oxygen in the blood. This is a dangerous condition with a high risk of death.

Treatment of ARDS often involves the use of a breathing machine known as a ventilator.
