Intensive Care Units can be referred to by various names which mean the same thing, for example Critical Care Unit (CCU), Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or Intensive Therapy Unit (ITU). The unit cares patients with acute illness or injury that require specialised procedures and treatments by specialised staff.

Intensive care units were grouped into 4 types:
– Medical, including coronary care
– Surgical, including trauma and cardiovascular
– Neonatal and pediatri
– Medical-surgical
.

The mean ICU length of stay was 3.4 (±4.5) days for intensive care patients who survived to hospital discharge, with a median of 2 day (IQR 1–4) (Table 1). A third of patients (35.9%) spent only 1 day in the ICU and 88.9% of patients were in the ICU for 1–6 days, representing 58.6% of the ICU bed-days in the cohort.
Studies looking at long term survival after ICU admission range between 60–75% at one year (1–4). There are several patient factors that have been identified that affect clinical outcome. Patients over 75 years have a survival of 55% at one year in one study (5).
The strong drugs and the treatment the ICU staff had to give you to help support your body, will have affected your body and mind. It is common for patients in an ICU to experience hallucinations, nightmares or dreams that can seem real and very frightening.
