Haematology is the specialty responsible for the diagnosis and management of a wide range of benign and malignant disorders of the red and white blood cells, platelets and the coagulation system in adults and children. Haematologists care directly for patients on hospital wards and out patient clinics.

Four major areas of study within hematology include hemoglobinopathy, hematologic malignancies, anemia and coagulopathy. Hemoglobinopathy is the study of abnormality in the globin chains of hemoglobin molecules. In addition to sickle cell anemia, thalassemia (also known as erythropoiesis) is part of hemoglobinopathy.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates about 3 million people in the U.S. have some type of anemia. Anemia happens when you don’t have enough healthy red blood cells.
Hematologists diagnose, treat and manage a wide range of diseases that affect your blood cells. Blood diseases may be benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Some diseases keep your blood from flowing (blood clots). Other diseases make you bleed more than normal.
