T helper function. T helper cells are necessary for a cascading process of antibody production. Macrophages and other kinds of accessory cells (e.g. dendritic cells) release interleukin-1 (IL-1), a protein that stimulates T helper cells. T helper cells in turn produce cytokines that stimulate the proliferation and conversion of B lymphocytes to memory cells.
